>Interesting comments about t...>tangerineowl

>Interesting comments about the internal charred pieces removed a few years back.

Yes, I have added the following to my post above:

"In fact, even the charred areas that were removed in the 2002 restoration and have been kept, could be carbon-dated:

"A significant amount of charred cellulose was removed during a restoration of the shroud in 2002. Material from different scorch locations across the shroud was saved in separate containers. The elemental carbon could be completely cleaned in concentrated nitric acid, thus removing all traces of foreign fibers, sebum from repeated handling, and adsorbed thymol from an unfortunate procedure to sterilize the shroud's reliquary in 1988. In addition, the separate samples would give a `cluster' of dates, always a desirable procedure in archaeology. A new radiocarbon analysis should be done on the charred material retained from the 2002 restoration." (Rogers, R.N., 2005, "Studies on the radiocarbon sample from the shroud of turin," Thermochimica Acta, 425, pp.189–194, pp.193–194).

>Concerning the question of the image creation upon the cloth, I wonder if an Old Testament priest act 'shadow' would hold a clue to the formation?

I don't understand what you mean by "an Old Testament priest act 'shadow'." The Gospels do not record any "Old Testament priest" being involved in the crucifixion and burial of Jesus. Nor is there any reason why a priest would be involved in the crucifixion and burial of a blasphemer (as Jesus was wrongly assumed to be) who had been condemned by the Sanhedrin to die an accursed death on a cross (Gal 3:13; Dt 21:23).

Especially when it was the Day of Preparation for the Passover (Mk 15:42-45; Lk 23:50-54; Jn 19:14,31,42) when all the priests would be fully involved in the slaughter of the Passover lambs in the Temple (Ex 12:18-21; 2Chr 35:1,6,11; Ezr 6:19-21) for the many tens of thousands of Passover pilgrims.

>Speculation, I know.

Anyone can speculate, but any proposed explanation of how the image was formed on the Shroud has to fully and plausibly explain all the major features of the Shroud, including the image's extreme superficiality only microns deep on the surface of the flax fibres, its photographic negativity, its 3-D encoded information, its having been imprinted at a distance onto linen (along with non-body objects e.g. flowers and coins) from a dead body, the anatomical perfection of the wounds, the real bloodstains (complete with UV halos and bilirubin and their separation from the body without breaking them), not just some of them.

StephenStephen E. I saw your message just in time to watch the program on SBS. It was called "The Shroud of Turin: New Evidence" which was the British version of Discovery Channel's "Unwrapping the Shroud: New Evidence" shown in the USA in December 2008. It may have been shown before on Australian TV but I had not seen it.

There are two reviews of the program by Ray Schneider and Ed Prior.

It seems that it may be downloadable in 5 parts on YouTube beginning with "Shroud Of Turin - New Evidence 2009 - Part 1 of 5.flv" so I will try that tomorrow morning when my download allowance is greater.

Thanks again for alerting me about this in time for me to see it. I would have felt really disappointed if I had missed the program.

Stephen E. JonesStephen E.
