A technique using 3D digital imaging, filters and the conversion of the gray scale color of the Shroud's positive image show color. This resulted in one instance that shows Jesus' hair color to be dark auburn.

Thanks, but I for one couldn't care less about what colour Jesus' hair was.

And presumably nor could the New Testament writers because there is no description in the New Testament of Jesus physical appearance.

Having said that, I am sceptical that Jesus' hair colour could be derived from the `gray scale' (or uniform yellow scale) intensity of the hair image on the Shroud.

First, if you Google "impossible to recover color from grey scale" (without the quotes) you will find many statements like, "It's impossible to directly recover a colour image from the grey scale version of it ..." Presumably that is because converting colour to gray scale loses that colour information irretrievably.

Second, since the colour of human hair is affected (if not determined) by the ambient light it is seen in, the colour of Jesus hair at the instant of His resurrection would largely depend on whether:

1) there was early morning sunlight in the Tomb from the entrance stone having been rolled away (Mt 28:2; Mk 16:4; Lk 24:2);

2) there was an angel (or angels) in the Tomb radiating light (Mt 28:1-3); and

3) Jesus Himself radiated light, as at the Transfiguration (17:1-2; Mk 9:2-3).

In respect of 3), the Italian ENEA experiments to try to reproduce the Shroud image colour on linen found that the closest match was from "a short and intense burst of VUV [vacuum ultraviolet] directional radiation":

"Instead, the results of ENEA `show that a short and intense burst of VUV [vacuum ultraviolet] directional radiation can color a linen cloth so as to reproduce many of the peculiar characteristics of the body image on the Shroud of Turin, including shades of color, the surface color of the fibrils of the outer linen fabric, and the absence of fluorescence".
(Tosatti, M., 2011, "The Shroud is not a fake," The Vatican Insider, 12 December).

If the image (including the hair) was imprinted on the Shroud by an intense burst of ultraviolet light, presumably that would have had a major effect on what hair colour was converted to a uniform yellow colour image of that hair on the Shroud.

Stephen E.
