[Right (enlarge). Pope John Paul II (r. 1978- 2005) prays before the Shroud at the 1998 exposition. "I am not aware of anyone in ... [the Shroud pro-authenticity] community who thinks the Shroud or its image should be worshipped. On the contrary members of the Shroud pro-authenticity community have stated strongly that neither the Shroud nor its image should be worshipped"[12Apr08]:

"We firmly believe that the Shroud should not be esteemed as an object of faith. ... It dishonors God to ... worship the Shroud ... or to treat it as an object of prayer or faith"[SH90, 20-21]
